It’s one of the most common things we hear from our logistics company partners: How do we keep employee attendance up?
In the logistics company sphere, we know you need your employees to show up on time and as scheduled – with each missed hour or day dinging your productivity and effectiveness.
While this is a common issue, there is no one-size-fits-all solution – but there are ways to increase attendance and help your bottom line.
And it starts with having a solid policy in place.
Generally speaking, employees don’t show up for work for a few main issues: Illness, childcare problems and transportation woes.
So, how does knowing the cause help with employee attendance?
One way to help employees is by offering flexible working schedules. This can also foster a sense of loyalty, with employees knowing that their bosses care about them and their struggles.
If possible, allowing employees to work earlier or later – or even another shift – can help with attendance issues.
Another option is offering telehealth services as part of your medical benefits policy. Telehealth can help your employees by offering them a way to see their health care provider remotely – so they don’t have to take a day off work.
Many companies also offer gas cards or Lyft or Uber services to employees periodically as well – this can help with attendance issues surrounding transportation woes. A rideshare program is also a low-cost fix.
For many employees, attendance issues can be tied to dissatisfaction in the workplace. As employers, no one wants to hear that their employees hate coming to work, so as management, its important to take a hard look at the environment you provide and see if there are changes to be made that will boost morale (and attendance). Things like bonuses, recognition programs, clear expectations, more growth opportunities and listing to feedback are key.
It’s no longer a badge of honor to never miss work. Younger generations don’t see perfect attendance in the same way as their older peers.
Setting a clear policy that includes information can help set boundaries as well. Include:
- Attendance expectations
- Consequences of missing work or being late
- Support for issues that cause absenteeism or tardiness
